 The Expression of Compliment 


People usually add compliments when they congratulate someone.  A compliment is when you say something nice about someone.  A compliment is also defined as an expression of prise or admiration.  People like to hear comments about their good behavior,  how hard they are working,  or their appearance.  When we give compliments  we should always be positive and always mean what we say.  Giving compliments is telling something nice to or about someone.  To complicomp means to tell someone that you like the way they look or that you are pleased with something they have done.  It is a way of showing that you have noticed and appreciated something about someone or situation.

2. Language features of giving compliments

a.  Compliment for appearance/thing worn/owned

-I really like your hair

- That's a lovely dress

- You look so beautiful

- I think you look good in white

- I love your jacket

- What a beautiful hat! 

- It looks good on you


b.  Compliment for performance

- I think you are very great 

- that was a nice performance. 

- you are really a good singer. 

- you are wonderful on the stage

- you are doing great.  You did great. 

- It is very interesting


c.  Compliment for achievement

- good job. 

- great job 

- you are a great teacher. 

- you've done a great job

- you are clever. 

- how genius you are! 

- you deserve to get this

- you are doing just fine. 


In indonesia culture,  being modest is the best way of responding a compliment.  The following are examples of responding a compliment. 

a.  Thank you.  It's very kind of you to say that. 

b.  Thank you.  Yours is nicer. 

c.  Thank you,  but it is not anything special. 

d.  Yours is nice,  too. 

e.  Do you think so?

f.  I'm glad you enjoyed it. 

g.  Thank you very much. 

h.  I am glad you like it. 

i.  Thanks a lot. 

j.  It's nice of you to say so.
